CANSKATE IS THE LEARN TO SKATE PROGRAM WHICH ALL OTHERS ARE MEASURED AGAINST.
CanSkate is Canada's number one Learn to Skate program and has taught millions of Canadians to reach their recreational and competitive goals on the ice.
Skate Canada's CanSkate program based on Sport Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles, which includes specific skills designed for success in all ice sports including: recreational skating, hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating. The result is a dynamic program that prepares all skaters for virtually every ice sport.
What is the difference between PreCanSkate and CanSkate?
PreCanSkate is an un-parented program designed for beginner skaters aged 3-5 with little to no skating experience. Students will learn basic skating skills taught by certified Skate Canada coaches including how to move safely and maintain balance while on the ice. This program helps build confidence as skaters begin their skating journey.
CanSkate is comprised of a complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning. Skaters should be able to move around unassisted before moving into CanSkate stages. The program uses nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.
Skate Canada is also proud to have all its programs taught through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).
What equipment is needed for CanSkate?
Hockey Helmet:
CSA approved hockey helmets are mandatory for all CanSkaters. Ski/bike or other non- CSA hockey helmets are not permitted on the ice for safety and liability reasons.
Skates:
It is recommended that skaters wear “lace-up” style hockey or figure skates as they provide the best support, allow proper movement, and accommodate an adjustable fit.
The skate’s boot must be firm and must provide support to the foot and ankle in order to prevent injury.
Warm clothing:
Skaters should dress warmly and comfortably in layers to enjoy their skating experience. Snow pants or nylon pants over top layers of clothing are a good idea as they provide warmth and dryness during the session.
Gloves or mitts are mandatory for all skaters.
